Well, I have spent the past week reading and grading more blogs. There were just a few students, literally 3 students, that were thoughtful in their postings. The other students did not do such a great job. Some students failed to blog at all. As I was reading some of the blogs, I could tell that some of the students were blogging just to put something down; sometimes just writing one sentence. Not reflecting on what they were learning, doing in their jobs, or reflecting on life in general. I was a little disappointed this unit in the quality of the blogs (with the exception of a few). I have not posted grades yet, but will do this by Monday. I am debating whether some should get partial credit or if it is an all or nothing approach from here on out. I will discuss this with the instructor and see what we can agree upon.
For the next unit, since I am in charge of teaching and carrying out the lesson, I have given the students prompts and things to think about as they blog. The unit is about culture, so if they needed a little push or a little help in provoking thoughts and reflections, I was glad to offer a couple of things to think about and reflect upon. Maybe this will help the quality and quantity of the blogs completed for this next unit.

Isn't that frustrating?! I understand the first few weeks, but it's such an easy grade and so clearly represents the most important topic (their own opinion) that I find it difficult to understand how students consistently blow off their blogs. I have some RN-BS students that are having similar problems. Some are great, most are pretty decent, but a few are clearly not giving it any real thought at all.
Even though the blogs are their own reflection, is there any ruberic set up to help them know what is expected?
Sounds like the prompts you are planning for the next unit will be very helpful. Maybe the prompts will get them thinking more!
Janice.
Shara,
Great idea about the prompts. Do you ever wonder if there is such a thing as a "blank screen" stumbling block like there is a "blank page"?
It is disappointing to have them write/type just to be putting something down. From the students aspect, I can tell you that it gets frusturating as all get out to open a post to just read "thanks" or "way to go" or "blah", you get my point.
I like the idea of using a pencil also. I would hate to have made a comment that the instructor didn't agree with just to have it marked out. However, it sounds like the two of you are working very well together and I'm sure she probably agreed with what you had already written. Way to go! (Hee hee, couldn't resist).

Yes, the ideal of prompts is a great idea....I do agree that you can literally have a blank screen....blogging is very new to some also, so cues and prompts would be helpful.
